The short film 'Short Change' produced by Ballyneale man Tommy Fitzpatrick is in the running to win the Best Short Film gong at the Irish Film and Television Awards this weekend.

The film that was shown at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in the US at the end of January has been nominated for an award in this category at the IFTAs, which take place in Dublin on Saturday night.

Hosting the IFTAS will by actor Simon Delaney of Bachelor's Walk and Zonad fame, who starred in a short film produced by Tommy Fitzpatrick entitled 'Every Second Sunday'.

'Short Change', which explored the despair of a young single mother addicted to slot machine gambling, received a great response from an audience of seasoned film critics at the Sundance Festival that took place in Utah between January 20 and 30.

Tommy Fitzpatrick travelled to the US with the award-winning director and screenwriter Cathy Brady and the film's main actress Nora Jane Noone for the ten day festival.

'Short Change' was one of just 38 short films to make the list from a record total of 3,014 international short film submissions.

Though not winners at the Festival, the young group were stopped many times on the street and complimented on the impact of their powerful film.

Speaking from the US, Tommy said it had been an "amazing 10 days" and he, Cathy and Nora Jane were greatly appreciative for all the help the National Film School at IADT, the Irish Film Board and Culture Ireland afforded them in getting out to Park City, Utah for the festival.

"We were in awe of the standard of other short films, both US and International, which were in competition with us and hope that we will get to feature at Sundance again with future film projects.

"We would like to thank all our family and friends who supported us over these last 12 months and continue to do so on the festival tour," Tommy added.

'Small Change' has also been nominated for Best Short film at this year's Irish Film and Television Awards IFTA to be held this Saturday, February 12.

Tommy Fitzpatrick recently graduated from the National Film School at IADT in Dun Laoghaire with a first class honours degree in Film Producing and Documentary Direction.

Tommy's talent is swiftly attracting international recognition.

He aims to produce more short films and documentaries and plans to produce feature films in the future.
