Clonmel Boxing Club held its annual T.J. Redmond Memorial Boxing tournament in the ballroom in Fethard. Two Clonmel underage boxers got the show started when Kenny Dillon took on Michael Tighe, Bracken, Dublin and Cian Ryan went in with Josh Magagh, Bracken, Dublin in very entertaining exhibition contests.

Lee Kelly was next in the ring for Clonmel and he put on a great display of boxing to win on a unanimous decision against G. Shapkin of Bracken, Dublin.

Nathan Dalton was also impressive in his majority decision win over Mike McDonagh, Bracken. Andrew Connolly was in against a very experienced boxer in Andy McDonagh, St. Paul's Waterford and Andrew put up a great performance but narrowly lost out on a 2-1 decision after a double countback.

Irish ladies champions Shannon Power and Shauna O'Keeffe had a very competitive exhibition contest.

James Shelly faced up to Jason Grace, Slievenamon, in one of the best bouts of the day, with Shelly taking the decision after three great rounds.

The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for Clonmel boxer and young Fethard man Jack Connolly, who squared up to Prince Sawili, Bracken. The contest started at a ferocious pace, with the Dublin boxer getting some great scores, but Jack had other ideas and he pushed his opponent back in the second and third rounds with some fantastic boxing, much to the delight of the home crowd.

The contest finished 14 points to 5 in Jack's favour and this topped off a great weekend for the Fethard man, with Jack winning his bout in the Ireland v. Wales schoolboys international held in Dublin the previous Friday night. Jack beat Jim Price from Wales on a majority decision.

Dessie Fahey was next up for Clonmel and he faced Rory O'Donoghue, Watergrasshill in a senior bout. Dessie gave a masterclass in counter punching to take a well-deserved victory in what was one of his best performances to date.

In the last contest of the day Irish senior heavyweight champion Con Sheehan had an exhibition bout against Irish senior middleweight champion and European silver medallist Darren O'Neill, Paulstown. The Fethard crowd was treated to senior international boxing at its best, with these two boxers currently training to defend their senior titles in a few weeks time.

The best boxer award went to Lee Kelly, Clonmel and he was presented with the award by Clonmel Boxing Club President Billy Kane and T.J. Redmond junior.

Many thanks are extended to the staff and committee of Fethard ballroom for their help.
