Seamus Healy backs nurses in their jobs campaign

South Tipperary Independent TD Seamus Healy has expressed strong support for the campaign of the nursing unions, INMO and PNA, against the government’s plan to sack 1000 experienced temporary nurses/midwifes and to replace them with 1000 new graduates at 80% of the current pay rate.

He says that Government suggestions that these are new jobs are totally false.

He says in a statement - “The unions have pointed out that the HSE could save 54% of pay bill if nurses now employed by agencies were employed directly by the HSE.

“Clearly the government’s plan is designed not to make immediate savings, but to drive down the pay of all nurses including serving nurses as part of a process. This policy will then be extended to all public servants. The Minister has already stated that other grades will also be affected.

“Unfortunately, Mr Reilly is being supported in this wage reduction policy by the Labour Party including two Junior Labour Party ministers in his Department.

“I call on all people of goodwill to support the nurses and their unions in their totally justified campaign, which can only benefit patients as well as nurses”.
