New Year's Day was an oasis of calm in the midst of a very busy Christmas and January at the maternity unity in South Tipperary General Hospital - with no baby at all born on January first!
Two South Tipp families did welcome little bundles of joy from the stork on the morning of January 2 , however.
The first baby born in the hospital in 2011 was little Sophie Hayes. Sophie was born to mum Denise, who is from Ballingarry. Baby Sophie weighed in at 2890g, or six pounds six ounces.
Just a few hours later the second baby of the New Year was born to a delighted new mum, Deirdre Hennebry. Deirdre, from Carrick on Suir, gave birth to a healthy baby boy who will be named Ryan. Ryan weighed a whopping 4239g, or nine pounds five ounces, when he was born.
According to the staff of STGH's maternity unit the week between Christmas and New Year was a very busy one for them, with several babies being born every day, however on January 1, the traditional day to celebrate new birth, there were no new arrivals at all.
Things have now returned to normal, with births at the unit each day.
