Stephen Heffernan, a 5th Year student at the High School, Clonmel is the proud recipient of a three-week scholarship to Fuerstenzell in Germany.
Two weeks ago Stephen from Banard, Newcastle, received a letter from the German Embassy congratulating him on achieving one of the highest results in the Junior Cert German state exam, which he sat last year. He was invited to the Goethe Institute in Dublin to attend an interview in the German language in front of a panel of four people - two native speakers and two members of the German Inspectorate.
Under normal circumstances this would be a daunting experience for any young person in English and it should have been even more daunting to be interviewed in a foreign language for 30 minutes, but Stephen kept a cool head and answered all the questions with great fluency in German.
According to his teacher Martina O’Reilly “this is a wonderful opportunity for Stephen, as the trip will greatly improve his spoken German and help in his preparation for his oral exam in the Leaving Certificate, which is worth 25%.”
Several High School students in the past have received this scholarship and Stephen is really looking forward to what promises to be a wonderful trip.
