A councillor has called on his local Town Council to ‘abolish’ plans proposed for a new Tipperary Town Link Road and Traffic Management Plan in the face of what has been termed as a ‘venomous reaction.’

Speaking at the July meeting of Tipperary Town Council, as members were attempting to fix a date to consider a Managers Report on the proposal, Independent Cllr. Denis Leahy questioned the need to fix a date.

‘What is the need for this meeting? I work in a pub and not one person has spoken positively about this plan. I have never, in all my thirty years on this Council had as many emails, mail, phone calls and personal calls regarding an issue, and one that has prompted such a venomous reaction. I think it should be abolished. ’

Stating that all of the town councillors had received representations on this matter Mayor Cllr. Anna Touhy Halligan said those points should should be discussed. The major said they should go ahead and fix the date for the workshop and subsequent meeting.Responding Town Clerk, Mr. Paul Murray stated the matter was on the agenda to fix a date to consider the plan and that this was premature. He said there was a process which they had to follow and informed the members that he had received 103 submissions on this proposed new plan and that he would be preparing a Managers Report.

He said the Council then had six weeks to consider this and that he was proposing that they would hold a workshop to go through all the issues.

Subsequent to this he said they would then have their formal meeting where the plan could be amended and alternatives adopted. The town clerk said that they had received negative submissions on this proposal, but that there were also some positive submissions and that there were also some suggestions that deserved to be considered. The manager report will be considered at the special meeting.
