Politicians love to take the credit for everything with Independent TD Mattie McGrath even claiming he had an important role to play in the appointment of his Oireachtas colleague Tom Hayes as Minister for State.
Deputy McGrath has welcomed the Taoiseach’s acknowledgment of his role in securing a Minister of State for South Tipperary.
He was speaking after the Taoiseach admitted during Leaders Questions that the representations made to him by Deputy McGrath had received a favourable response.
The Taoiseach commented - “In fact, the big news from Tipperary, particularly in Newcastle and the surrounding region was why Deputy Mattie McGrath made representations to the Taoiseach to appoint a Minister of State in South Tipperary. He got his answer. He delivered the Minister of State.†Deputy McGrath replied by saying “We are all delighted. I will tell the Taoiseach one thing, I did not think that I had that much influence over the Taoiseach.â€
“It was very gratifying to hear the Taoiseach admit that he had listened to the arguments put forward by myself in terms of nominating a Minister from South Tipperary. Minister Tom Hayes’ appointment is very welcome. I wish the Taoiseach had been more receptive to the numerous other suggestions I have brought to his Office over the course of this Dáil, because if there is one thing that is clear from the record of this Government so far, it is that is failing abysmally to listen to the ordinary citizen,†he added
