Rescue group highlight dangers of isolated lakes
Michael Hickey, of the Carrick on Suir River Rescue Group that recovered the body of Joe Grinsell from a lake at Ahenny on Sunday morning, has appealed to people not to swim in isolated lakes.

Michael Hickey, of the Carrick on Suir River Rescue Group that recovered the body of Joe Grinsell from a lake at Ahenny on Sunday morning, has appealed to people not to swim in isolated lakes.

“Joe went for a swim the evening before, he got into difficulty and somebody raised the alarm when they went to the nearest house,” said Mr Hickey.

The search started around 6pm on Saturday after the alarm had been raised and continued until 11pm. It resumed on Sunday morning at 8am and at 9.20am the body was recovered. “The lake was in a very isolated spot. It was difficult to get the boat to the lake” said Mr Hickey. The River Rescue leader appealed to people not to swim in isolated deep lakes.

“People do regularly swim in the lakes at Ahenny but I don’t think people realise how dangerous it is” he said.
