A river rescue leader has appealed to young people to stop diving off the two bridges in Carrick on Suir.

Michael Hickey, Carrick River Rescue, said diving off the old and new bridges in Carrick had become very popular during the hot weather. He described the practice as very dangerous and called on parents to make themselves aware of the situation.

“One very young kid had to be rescued from the river after diving off the bridge. He was very lucky, and another young child had ribs broken after diving off the bridge. These kids are just copying what the older lads are doing. I don’t think people realise how dangerous it is in a tidal river. If it continues there is going to be a fatality” he warned
