A member of Rathgormack Gun Club has become the first Irish man to win the USA National Cocker Spaniel Field Competition with his beloved dog Troy.

Richard Whelan, who hails from Feddans, Rathgormack, and his trusty dog won the top award at the National Cocker Championship in Tyrone, Pennsylvania earlier this month.

The Rathgormack man lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Joanne and sons Brian and William and regularly travels across the USA to compete in field dog trials.

He is also a highly respected judge at field dog trial competitions. Richard’s father William was a keen sportsman and member of Rathgormack Gun Club while his brother Vincent is the Club’s current secretary. His proud family in Ireland congratulate him on his success.
