St. Joseph’s Primary School is celebrating after winning the RTE Lyric FM Best Primary School Choir in the annual national Christmas choir competition. Over one hundred choirs entered, sending in a CD or MP3 of their song to the RTE Lyric FM competition.

The choirs entries were featured on Niall Carroll’s daytime show for the month of December with the winners announced on December 23rd.

Principal Louise Tobin spoke of how proud the school is of this achievement.

“Our choir is made up from all pupils in 4th, 5th & 6th classes who practice once a week under the expertise of Choir Conductor Ms. Helen Colbert.

The winning song this year was titled, Jingle Those Bells. It is a very funky catch version of Jingle Bells and we believe the judges loved the enthusiasm the girls captured in their singing of it.

We enter every year and in 2010 we were highly commended and invited to sing with the RTE Concert orchestra in RTE to be featured on a Christmas CD, which was subsequently produced on the Lyric FM label.

We are extremely proud of this achievement and it is due to the commitment and dedication of Ms. Colbert and the girls.”

The choir had to record a song for entry into the competition and remarkably they had to achieve this in one-take.

“My husband John Murray is a music teacher at Cashel Community School and he helped us record the song,” explained conductor of St. Joseph’s choir Ms Colbert.

“We have fifty choir members and it took a lot of focus and concentration to record the song in one take.

The girls are great when the chips are down and we managed to get across the liveliness of the song and create a really good track.

We’ve entered the RTE Lyric school choir’s competition a number of times and this year I checked to see what other choirs were entering and was worried when I saw some of the names knowing what they have achieved so far.

It was a total surprise and an amazing moment when we found out we had won and I’m very proud of the girls.” she said.
