A man returned to his home in Knockavilla in the early hours of Sunday morning to find two masked men trying to burgle the premises.

The plucky resident became involved in a struggle with the burglars, who fled the scene empty handed.

Gardai in Tipperary Town are investigating the aggravated burglary and have appealed to anyone who saw suspicious activity in the Dundrum/Knockavilla area between 4am and 6am on Sunday to contact Tipperary Garda Station or their local garda station with information.

The resident disturbed the two burglars around 5am when he returned to his home located in an estate in Knockavilla village. The two criminals were wearing balaclavas and had entered the house through the back door.

According to gardai, one of them may have been armed with a knife. It’s not known as yet whether they had a getaway vehicle.

Gardai are currently viewing CCTV footage of the area and carrying out door-to-door enquiries in Knockavilla as part of their investigations.

A Tipperary Garda Station spokesman said there wasn’t anyone else in the house at the time of the break-in and the resident, who disturbed the criminals, didn’t suffer any injuries.

He said they were following a number of lines of enquiry into the burglary but nothing definite as yet.
