Labour MEP for Munster, Phil Prendergast, has welcomed the referendum result in her home Dail Constituency of South Tipperary, where the Yes side carried it on the day by 60.65% to the no side’s 39.95%.
Speaking from Clonmel, Ms. Prendergast, said - “I think that while a significant majority carried the vote on the day, there is no cause for celebration. I’ve said all along that this Treaty is a very small step towards the stabilization of the Eurozone, but much uncertainty lies ahead.
“A lot of difficult decisions need to be taken in the immediate future and we are faced with huge challenges as a country, and as a member of the European Union.
“We need to use the momentum for change that this campaign has created and focus it on the steps that need to be taken to create a comprehensive jobs and growth pact, and to stabilize the Euro.
“I also want to take this opportunity to specifically reject some of the insensitive comments made about Greece during this campaign that clearly lacked an understanding of the realities of the situation. I wish to unequivocally express my solidarity with the Greek people.”
