Gardai announce major traffic restrictions for visit

Major traffic restrictions will be in place around Cashel, Fethard and Killenaule from Thursday evening ahead of Queen Elizabeth 11’s visit to the Rock of Cashel and Coolmore Stud near Fethard on Friday.

They are part of the massive security arrangements for the British Monarch’s historic visit to Co. Tipperary.

Gardai have stressed that restrictions will not prevent traffic from accessing or leaving any of the three towns.

“We are monitoring everything and it’s our intention that business will go on as normal subject to security arrangements,” said Insp Tony Ferris of the Garda Press Office.

There were plans to introduce a permitting system for local residents travelling into and out of Cashel town from Thursday evening but this was abandoned by the Gardai. An outer traffic restriction cordon about 7km around the town will be put in place from 6pm on Thursday. From this time until midday on Friday, traffic will only be allowed enter Cashel Town via Friar St., Main St., Cahir Road and Junction exits 8 and 9 from the M8 motorway.

No traffic will be allowed through Cashel at Ladyswell Street, Moore Lane, Rock Villa, Dominic Street, Boherclough Street, Lower Gate Street, Bank Place, Canopy Street, The Green to Wallers Lot, The Kiln, Mountjudkin Road, Camas Road, Circular Road and the N8 (Old Dublin Road) from Junction 7 to Cashel town.

Junction 7 on M8 Cork Dublin motorway will also be closed from 6pm on Thursday and will re-open early on Friday afternoon.

Access to Cashel from the M8 will be via Junctions 8 and 9.

Diversionary signs will be placed at all junctions and cordon points will be manned by Garda personnel to assist the public.

Since Monday, there have been traffic flow restrictions on the M8 Dublin Cork motorway around Cashel for a distance of 10km from the northern side of Junction 7 to the southernside of Junction 9.

The speed limit has been reduced to 100kmph and traffic has been confined to travelling on one lane, which isthe outside lane of the carriageways both northbound and southbound.

Vehicle Messaging Sign have been put in place on the northbound lane at Junction 10 Cahir (approx 5 km south of Cashel) and at the 2 km sign for Cashel.

VMS signs are also in place on the southbound lanes at Junction 6, Horse and Jockey, 5 km north of Cashel and at the 2 km sign for Cashel.

According to the Gardai, the outer cordons traffic restrictions will be put in place around Fethard and Killenaule from 6pm on Thursday. All normal business will be allowed to continue in both towns and there will be local road diversions.

Junctions will be manned by gardai from 6pm on Thursday and diversionary signs will be in place.

Local traffic will be allowed to pass through with restrictions.
