Labour Senator Denis Landy is encouraging students countrywide to get their SUSI applications in before this Thursday, August 1st - the deadline for new applications.

“Students who have their applications submitted by Thursday will have a good chance of being in a position to have their grant awarded and in payment at the time they return to college in October, provided they qualify.

“Any student who misses the Thursday deadline will still be eligible to apply, however it is advised they submit it as early as possible to help avoid delays, as were experienced last year.

“A number of key improvements to the SUSI process have been brought about following Minister Ruairi Quinn’s decision to allocate extra resources on foot of a recent review of operations. These include the SUSI process opening four weeks earlier than last year, an increase in staff from 65 to 88 full-time equivalents, and an online tracking system so that students can check the status of applications online instead of ringing SUSI for this information. There is also now better engagement with Government agencies so that SUSI can access key data directly, removing the requirement from students to supply multiple documents. Meanwhile, the key dates for the SUSI application process have also been published on www.susi.ie.

“It is hoped that the improvements and streamlining of the SUSI system will help avert the undue delays which led to so much distress and anxiety for some students and their families last year.

“Students who wish to check their eligibility should log onto www.susi.ie where they will be stepped through the application process.”
