The South Tipperary electorate voted in favour of Seanad reform by a narrow margin.

50.4% voted Yes and 49.6 voted No in the Seanad referendum. There was a turnout of 41.7% in South Tipperary (23.386).The Seanad referendum was passed by exactly the same margin in North Tipperary which had a slightly higher turnout, 42.8%.

“This result is a victory for democracy where people went out to defend the retention of the Seanad because they wanted to save a body that stands for oversight, accountability and checks and balances against the Government of the day.Urban and rural areas rejected this attempt at abolition and now their clear message for Reform must be acted on by Government without delay,” said Senator Denis Landy.
