Gardai have arrested a man aged in his late 20s in connection with maliciously starting a fire at an apartments building in Clonmel town centre last week.

Fire fighters rescued two people from the burning building at Grubbs Court beside the Westgate on Wednesday night, July 20.

The man arrested in connection with starting the fire is understood to have been a resident of the building. A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The two people pulled to safety were stranded on the first floor and a rear roof of the four storey premises.

A spokesman for South Tipperary Fire Service said they received a report of the fire in a ground floor apartment of the building around 11.35pm and two units from Clonmel Fire Brigade rushed to the scene.

Most of the occupants of the building had escaped to safety when they arrived, apart from two people, who fire fighters rescued with the aid of ladders.

The ground floor apartment where the blaze broke out was completely destroyed.

One or two people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but there weren’t any other reported injuries, according to South Tipperary Fire Service.
