The “5 Steps to Living well with dementia in South Tipperary” project is holding a free family 5km walk around Marlfield Lake on Wednesday, July 30th at 7.30 pm. It starts and finishes at the Clonmel Park Hotel.
There will be free mugs provided to the first 100 entrants. The organisers are calling the walk “DONT FORGET to WALK THE 5 STEPS to Living well with dementia in South Tipperary”.
“We are arranging the Walk as part of the awareness and health promotion arm of the project. Exercise has been shown to be of value cognitively in dementia”, said a spokesperson.
The risk factors for heart disease – diet, smoking, obesity, diabetes – are all now known to be of importance in dementia. “What’s good for the heart is good for the head”. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing risk factors can delay the onset of dementia. Exercise is also very important for carers of people with dementia as stress of caring can produce a significant health burden and they should take care of their own health and leisure needs too.
