Marguerite Tierney a native of Ardfinnan has been appointed Communications Manager with Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
The South Tipp girl, whose family are based in Reechestown, Ardfinnan, has made her career in public relations, in Cork and Dublin, and this week she told The Nationalist that she is delighted to return to Cork and to work with a group that has such a community and positive spirit.
Daughter of Pauline and Micheal, who has a plumbing business, Marguerite is also sister to Gillian, who is now a teacher in Naas, and she has a brother Thomas, who farms and works in the plumbing business with thier father.
Marguerite is now based in the Cork head office of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Its a busy centre where not only guide dogs are trained from puppies, but puppy walkers are trained, and people with sight issues come to learn the skills they need for independent living, like cooking and even fashion advice. All these classes are provided free of charge.
A lesser known area of the charity’s work is the companion dogs they provide for children with autism.
As she starts her new job Marguerite has already undertaking training herself in how to work with the guide dogs, to support their training and daily work.
Her job will now involve raising awareness of the work the Irish Guide Dogs association do, and highlights their fund-raising projects, an important task as the organisation must raise 85% of its own funding and they need E4.2 million to run the organisation for a year. But even in these difficult times Marguerite says people are very good and support the organisation.
She also says the people involved are fantastic and so generous with their time.
Marguerite began her career with Cork based PR and advertising agency Hopkins Communications, she then worked as PR and Marketing Manager with Macra na Feirme, in their Dublin office. Most recently she has worked as Communications Manager for the Irish & UK market with award winning security company Netwatch, based in Carlow.
Marguerite holds a Degree in Business from WIT, a Masters in Marketing from NUIG and a HDip in PR & Event Management from the Fitzwilliam Institute, and she attended the Presentation Secondary School in Thurles as a boarder.
