South Tipperary County Council will not be withholding third level grants based on the payment of the Household Charge, they have announced. 450 students receive grants from the county council.
There has been cross-community welcome for this news, following some alarm last week that culminated in a student protest outside County Hall in Clonmel.
The protest took place on Tuesday afternoon when a group of about 20 students from LIT Clonmel and Thurles gathered in Clonmel town centre.
The following day the County Council contacted the Students Union at the local third level colleges to say that on legal advice the council would not be refusing the payment of student grants based on payment of the Household Charge.
The Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed this decision, however warn that if this decision was to be reversed they would have to take action.
