Legendary Tipp darts player, Eddie Morrissey, remembered

There was great excitement in The Auld Murray Inn recently when the Eddie Morrissey Darts Tournament took place in Tipperary Town. The family of lengendary darts player Eddie Morrissey sponsored the tournament as a separate competition within the Tipperary Town Darts League that takes place over the Summer months.

The exuberant winners of the Eddie Morrissey Shield were The Maid of Erin team beating runners-up The Snooty Pig.In another exciting final The Auld Murray Inn won the Eddie Morrissey Cup against runners-up The Black Sheep.

Eight teams take part in the Tipperary Town darts league and they all took part in Eddie Morrissey darts tournament. The teams were: The Auld Murray Inn, Churchwell, The Maid of Erin, The Snooty Pig, Donovans Bar, The Bit & Bridle, The Black Sheep and The Forge.

The Eddie Morrissey cup was set up by the Tipperary Town Darts League to celebrate and mark all Eddie’s magnificent achievements in darts.

In 1979 Eddie became the first and only Tipperary darts player to win the All-Ireland National Darts competition that was held in Castlebar County Mayo. Hundreds of supporters travelled from Tipperary to watch Eddie successfully win that resulted in his automatic representation of Ireland in the World Darts tournament held in Wembley.

In the semi-finals Eddie came up against the great Bobby George and was defeated gracefully in an experience that he will remember for the rest of his life. In his fifty year career, Eddie has won hundreds of singles and team tournaments and is known to all as a legend of the game.
