The Irish Sports Council and the network of Local Sports Partnerships across the country joined up with RTE's Operation Transformation Programme to organise physical activity events throughout the country.

On Saturday last, South Tipperary Sports Partnership organised a 5k walk in Clonmel along the Sl na Slinte route.

Over 80 men, women and children took part in the walk which was led by Walking leader Mary Flynn.

The Sl na Slinte route in Clonmel was developed by the Borough Council with the Irish Heart Foundation. It is an official 5km route marked by bright colourful signposts which are not numbered and are situated at 1km intervals. This route can be walked in either direction.

Mary led the 80 participants in the wind and rain along the 5k route which started at the Town Hall, Parnell Street, Clonmel and proceeded across the junction at The Mall towards the Davis Road traffic lights where the participants turned right onto the Gashouse Bridge and at the Loreto Roundabout took a right along the Raheen Road. The route proceeded through the Old Bridge onto the Dungarvan road taking a right at the Dungarvan roundabout onto Convent Road. At the Irishtown traffic lights the walk continued straight on through Connelly Park turning right onto the Western Road proceeding towards the Sports Grounds onto Heywood Road, Cashel Road and Fethard Road junctions. The last km of the walk, participants proceeded to the Crescent Corner where they took a right and continued back to the Mall and continuing right to finish at the Town Hall on Parnell Street.

The walk was a huge success and enjoyed by all. If you were unable to attend on the day and would like to walk this route log onto www.stsp.ie and click on the walking section and select Sli na Slainte to get the route map and simply follow the signs, set your own pace to suit your enjoyment.

STSP would like to thank Operation Transformation, Irish Heart Foundation, An Garda Siochana, the Civil Defence, Clonmel Borough Council, Hearns Hotel, Niall O'Sullivan and Mary Flynn for their assistance in making the day a resounding success.
