A nine year old girl struck by a train a short distance from her home in Tipperary Town on Monday evening is in intensive care at South Tipperary General Hospital.
The accident happened on the rail line going through Tipperary town when the girl was struck by the last train on the line that evening which was travelling from Limerick Junction to Waterford. The girl lived in a council housing estate located beside the railway line. The small estate is situated between the railway line and Sean Treacy Park GAA grounds. The grounds of the Abbey School is on the other side of the railway line.
The Mayor of Tipperary Cllr. Jacqui Finnan said the town was devastated to hear of the tragedy involving the young girl.
The gardai, Iarnrod Eireann and the Rail Accident Investigation Unit are all investigating the incident.
