Trocaire has thanked the people of Co. Tipperary for their exceptional generosity during the Christmas season in supporting the world’s poorest people, as the organisation launched its Christmas gifts range.
The overseas aid agency revealed that Co. Tipperary bought ethical gifts to the value of €27, 807 last Christmas.
Eamonn Meehan, Trocaire’s Executive Director, said: “Last Christmas, people from Co. Tipperary continued their long tradition of compassion towards people facing poverty. Because of this, we were able to provide families in countries such as Malawi and Somalia with gifts from Ireland, vital lifelines such as chickens, goats, healthcare and education.
“As we once again enter into the Christmas season, I would like to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone in Co. Tipperary, who so kindly included on their Christmas shopping lists, gifts to support struggling families in poor communities overseas.
“I would also like to extend our sincere appreciation for Tipperary’s immense solidarity with people in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. The devastation caused by this disaster reminds us of how vulnerable the poorest people are and that in times of crisis it is those least able to cope who suffer the most. The poorest people often do not have an adequate standard of housing, few reserves of food and water and no savings on which to rely if disaster strikes.
“Trocaire gifts are one way in which we are able to strengthen people’s livelihoods, so that they have developed a means to cope with unexpected events by having, for example, a better income or stronger houses. In the long-term, Trocaire, with generous public support, funds projects that help communities living in areas vulnerable to extreme weather, to prepare in advance for almost-certain disasters like floods and droughts. We also continue to challenge those in power to change the political structures that leave people vulnerable and in poverty.”
Trocaire’s Christmas gifts range in price from €7 to €200 and include: chicks (€7) for families in Kenya, birth certs (€15) for newborn babies in Somalia, school kits (€30) for children in Honduras and Guatemala, goats (€50) to help families in the Democratic Republic of Congo, legal aid (€65) to seek justice for families affected by past conflict in Guatemala, support for grandparents (€85) from Ethiopia and Kenya caring for orphaned grandchildren, safe motherhood (€100) for pregnant women in Somalia, water sources for communities worldwide (€150) and houses (€200) for poor rural families in India.
