Handbag snatchers travelling in a small red car swiped bags from women in Fethard and Clonmel last Friday night.

Handbag snatchers travelling in a small red car swiped bags from women in Fethard and Clonmel last Friday night.

Gardai have issued an appeal for witnesses to the thefts to assist their investigations and have warned women carrying handbags to be careful.

The first incident occurred outside Super Valu at the Poppy Fields Shopping Centre in Clonmel around 9pm. A man wearing a black and white checked hoody top jumped out of a small red car and attempted to grab a hangbag from a woman but she struggled and he left empty handed.

A short time later, another woman had her handbag snatched by the hooded thief and his accomplice, who was driving the car in the car park of Tesco supermarket in Clonmel between 9.30pm and 10pm.

The two handbag thieves then headed to Fethard and snatched a bag from a woman on Main Street around 10pm.

Gardai are not following any definite line of inquiry into this spate of thefts and have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the handbag snatches or saw the red car, which was possibly a Nissan vehicle, in the vicinity of Tesco, the Poppy Fields and Fethard’s Main Street last Friday night to contact Clonmel Garda Station at (052) 6122222.

These aren’t the first handbag snatching incidents in Clonmel in recent weeks. Two women had their handbags stolen on Gladstone Street and in Irishtown on Thursday, November 17. A man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the thefts.
