Move Clonmel garda station to former army base call

South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has raised the appalling conditions of Clonmel Garda Station in Dáil Éireann and has sought its relocation to the former Kickham Barracks building which is owned by the Department of Justice and Defence.

“The current station is in appalling condition, is unfit for purpose and has insufficient space, while a perfectly suitable building lies vacant minutes from Clonmel town centre” said Deputy McGrath

“Clonmel Garda Station has been in need of re-location for some time now and this is a perfect opportunity with very little cost to the Department. The former Kickham Barracks building has ample space so I suggest the relocation of the Garda Station to this site.” continued McGrath

Deputy McGrath stated that the former Kickham Barracks site is large enough to accommodate the Garda Station while also being put to other uses such as accommodating the Reserve Defence Forces.

“There would also be sufficient space in the Barracks for other uses such as retaining a training camp for the Reserve Defence Forces who have been left without a base following the closure of Kickham Barracks. This would save the Department from wasting money on renting alternative accommodation for this purpose when it owns a perfectly suitable building in Clonmel while also providing security for the valuable building as it would be such a shame to see it left lying idle and open to vandalism.”

“I believe that this would be a perfect resolution for the Department as it would ensure that their vacant premises would be put to a good use and kept secure while enabling a much needed relocation of Clonmel Garda Station” concluded McGrath
