Council backs marriage equality for all

Race, religion or sexuality should not dictate a person’s marriage status or entitlement, according to Clonmel Borough Council, which fully backed a motion tabled by Labour Cllr Darren Ryan last week in which he called for the council’s support for full marriage equality for all citizens regardless of race, religion or sexuality.

“As a local authority we need to send out a positive message and follow other larger urban council on this, this is a basic call for equality,” said Cllr Ryan. He said that he has met with several LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual) groups locally who do astonishing work and their views should be represented like anyone else’s.

“We come in here and represent the views of different people and the message we should get out now is that we are in support of marriage equality irrespective of race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Cllr Teresa Ryan seconded the motion and said that at the end of the day we are all entitled to the same equality.
