South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has blasted the Minister for Justice and Defence for what he describes as the shameful manner in which he has treated the Reserve Defence Forces following the recent closure of Kickham Barracks in Clonmel.
“The men and women of the Reserve Defence Forces give their time voluntarily and to think that the Minister for Defence would just boot them out of Kickham Barracks without providing them with alternative accommodation is truly arrogant and shows the total lack of respect that Minister Shatter has for these volunteers” said McGrath
“I raised the matter of accommodation for the RDF with the Minister before the closure of Kickham Barracks and yet still no new accommodation has been provided for these volunteers. It is disgraceful just like his attitude towards those members who have recently been re-deployed to Kilkenny, Limerick and Cork following the closure of Kickham Barracks.
“It is absurd that this organisation have been left in a position of looking for rented accommodation, after the Government closed the Barracks, but unfortunately, this appears to be this Government’s idea of saving money. I have called on the Minister for Defence to finalise the new accommodation arrangements for the Reserve Defence Forces without delay so that these volunteers can get back to training” concluded Deputy McMcGrath.
