Trocaire is making a call out to Co. Tipperary for Trocaire boxes to be returned from this weekend. The charity’s annual Lenten campaign ended on Easter Sunday. Trocaire has thanked the people of Co. Tipperary for generously supporting the Lenten Campaign again this year through its Trócaire boxes.

“I would like to thank everyone from Tipperary who has taken a Trocaire box into their homes,” said Justin Kilcullen, Director of Trocaire. “Their initiative in taking a box is making an extraordinary contribution to changing the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. Children like Daniel Okweng, the Ugandan boy on this year’s Trocaire box, will go to school, have enough food and help build their local communities in the future, thanks to this support.”

This year’s Trocaire Lenten campaign highlighted the efforts of people from northern Uganda in rebuilding their communities after a twenty year war. Three hundred people from Daniel Okweng’s community were massacred by rebels from Joseph Kony’s Lords Resistance Army. Trocaire, with donations from Ireland, is helping people rebuild their lives and farms by providing agricultural training, livestock and seeds, building water sources and supporting trauma counselling.

“Parishes across Tipperary will gladly accept returned Trocaire boxes from this weekend,” said Mr Kilcullen. “Anyone who has a Trocaire box at home or in work can kindly drop it back to their local parish and we can start putting these generous donations into action.”

The charity is also reminding Tipperary primary schools about its national competition for a primary school to design next year’s 2013 Trocaire box for its 40th anniversary. The closing date is 27th April 2012. Details can be found on www.trocaire.org/education.
