The excessive weight of childrens’ school bags was raised at Monday’s meeting of South Tipperary County Council.

Cllr Richie Molloy asked that the council write to the Deparmtent of education asking that guidelines be issued to schools as to the maximum weight a child is expected to carry in a normal schoolbag.

He said heavy schoolbags can lead to spinal problems in later life and that children will never go back to ‘cycling to school’ if their schooolbags are too heavy.

Schools can help, he suggested, by allowing books to be left in school.
