There are 133 applicants on Carrick-on-Suir’s social housing list at the moment, the Town Council’s annual budget meeting was told.
Mayor of Carrick Cllr Kieran Bourke said about 38 of the applications are for one bedroom homes, more than 20 are for two-bedroom homes with a similar number of applications for three-bedroom homes.
He said these figures showed a demand for social housing in the town and called on the Government to return to building local authority houses.
Town Clerk Michael O’Brien said Government policy was outside the Council’s control. And he stressed that the Town Council was coping well with meeting the demand for social housing by housing applicants under the Rental Accommodation Scheme and other schemes or through the Council’s housing stock.
