Top motorbike racers from all over Ireland and abroad burned rubber on the rural roads near Faugheen last weekend to win vital points in Irish and international racing championships.
The Faugheen 50 Road Races made a welcome return last Saturday and Sunday after a four year break and were watched by an estimated 7000 people at vantage points along the 2.2 mile circuit over the two days.
Seventy-nine motorbike racers competed including all those leading the Irish championships as they could clock up vital championship points for winning at the meet. There was a strong contingent of competitors from the local Faugheen 50 Club and also racers from Scotland, England, the Isle of Man and Italy as they could gain international championship points.
Saturday was devoted to practise runs on the circuit and one non-championship race took place. Sunday was the main racing day and the showery weather delayed and forced a rerun of the first race, the Open 201-1010cc, and prompted the course clerk to shorten the 600cc race to six laps .
Isle of Man biker Dan Kneen was the star performer winning three of the meet’s ten races including the grand final, the Open 201 cc- 1010 cc Championship and 600cc Championship. He was also second in the 125cc Championship race.
Kneen was awarded the Alan Egan Perpetual Trophy for Man of the Meeting and also won the fastest lap award though the Faugheen 50 Races lap record of 1min 14.823 seconds at 105.850 mph set by by Ryan Farquhar in 2009 still stands. The Fastest Southern Rider award went to Derek McGee from Dublin. Best Faugheen 50 Club racer was John Walsh of Mullinavat, who was 4th in the Grand Final.
