A local authority is investigating the dumping of a large quantity of soiled baby nappies at a stream running by a scenic Comeragh Mountains walk a few miles from Clonmel.

The nappies have been dumped at two locations on either side of a footbridge over the mountain stream on the Military Road, a popular walking route that starts a short distance from Harney’s Cross.

There were more than 100 nappies visible to the eye dumped at the side of the stream when The Nationalist visited the site last Thursday. It was an ugly sight spoiling a beautiful landscape.

Waterford County Council says it is investigating the illegal dumping incident after receiving a complaint from a member of the public and is gathering evidence to enable it to prosecute those responsible.

The Council’s Environment Department says it plans to increase the frequency of inspections of the Military Road area and will use covert CCTV where necessary to identify people illegally dumping following this latest incident.

Ballmacarbry Cllr Michael O’Ryan has condemned the dumping and says he has noticed a proliferation of illegal fly-tipping in scenic areas.

Illegal dumping such as this was damaging the efforts to promote the Comeraghs and Co. Waterford as a tourist destination. It was also playing havoc with the natural habitat and water in the Comeraghs, said Cllr O’Ryan, who chairs Comeragh Municipal District Council.

Meanwhile, Waterford Co. Council said it was making arrangements to have the waste removed from the stream. It notified Tipperary Co. Council of the incident and that Council’s Water & Waste Water Department confirmed the location of the waste was downstream of the Council’s water intake points so it didn’t pose a threat to public water supplies.

The Council confirmed that a number of illegal dumping incidents have been reported in this area of the Comeragh Mountains over the last number of years as rubbish dumpers have taken advantage of the remote and secluded nature of the area to illegally dispose of waste.

Waterford Co Council encouraged members of the public to report all incidents of illegal dumping or litter they come across in the Comeraghs by contacting 0761 102020.

And it appealed to anyone with information that may help to identify those responsible for the dumping of nappies at the Military Road to contact its Environment Department.
