The people of Cahir and the surrounding areas have been shocked by a blaze that caused extensive damage to Cahir Day Care Centre in the early hours of this morning.
The alert was raised just before 3am and fire engines from two stations attended the scene. After the fire had been brought under control the scene was examined by scenes of crime garda technical experts.
The fire destroyed a shed, oil tank and caused extensive damage to windows, the roof over the kitchen area, and the toilet area.
An emergency meeting of the board of the Day Care Centre will meet tonight, Tuesday, to discuss what has happened. All activities and events at the centre have had to be suspended until further notice. It is not known how long the centre will remain closed.
A full report on the blaze, and the local reaction to the shocking event, will be in The Nationalist tomorrow, Wednesday.
