South Tipperary/ West Waterford Independent TD Mattie McGrath, has questioned the practice of An Post providing postal services free of charge to election candidates.
“Almost all candidates avail of this ‘Litir um Thoghchán’ service, the cost of which is met by the Exchequer,” said McGrath.
“Independent Candidate Sean Gallagher in an effort to save the Exchequer money requested that all candidates join together to send just one “Litir um Thoghchán” but unfortunately the other Candidates have chosen not to go down this road. This suggestion could have saved up to €10million of public funds. In the last general election, I chose not to send the Litir um Thoghchán in an effort to save the tax payer some money and I am disappointed that the Presidential candidates would not go along with Sean Gallagher’s suggestion to send a joint leaflet” continued McGrath.
