Games show that transplants work

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Twenty four brave athletes arrived home today from the 19th World Transplant Games bringing with them an impressive haul of 34 medals and treasured lifetime memories from their experience in the beautiful coastal city of Durban, South Africa.

Among them was Andrew Duncan from Clonmel who received a living donor kidney transplant from his father Malcolm in 2012, and proved to be a pro at the racket sports bagging a total of four medals; two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze in squash, badminton and table tennis.

Our hosts put on a spectacular week that brought together inspiring people from all over the world to celebrate the gift of life through sport and demonstrate that organ donation and transplantation works. The Irish Team can now look forward to competing in the next World Transplant Games which will be held in 2015 in Mar del Plata in Argentina.

Colin White,

Team Manager
