South Tipperary TD wants vote postponed

Independent TD for Tipperary South Mattie McGrath along with a number of his Independent colleagues from the Technical Group have called on the Irish Government to postpone the Treaty Referendum until the situation in Europe settles.

Independent TD for Tipperary South Mattie McGrath along with a number of his Independent colleagues from the Technical Group have called on the Irish Government to postpone the Treaty Referendum until the situation in Europe settles.

“The situation in Europe is changing by the hour and If parliamentarians in Germany, the main architects of the treaty, are not happy with it, then I believe Ireland should hold off.

“I think that the Irish people deserve the same time extension in order to have all the information to hand before making their decision on the Treaty.” said Deputy McGrath

“Irish People must be allowed to wait and see if Francois Hollande’s demand for growth-boosting measures are included in the pact before they make such a crucial decision. I think it would be utter folly to go ahead with a vote at this time while situations are so volatile in Europe.

“When we consider the rapidly changing situation along with all of the associated costs of a referendum, I believe it should be postponed especially when we may be forced to have another vote later on in the year.”

Deputy McGrath was joined with Independent Deputies Shane Ross, Stephen Donnelly, Catherine Murphy, Maureen O’ Sullivan, and Finian McGrath along with Independent MEP Marian Harkin in calling for the Referendum to be postponed
