Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann director and Fianna Fail senator Labhras O Murchu will officially open the popular Kickham Country Weekend in the Mullinahone on Friday evening.
The opening at 7.30pm will be followed by the first lecture of the weekend on Liam Ó Caithnia’s monumental ‘Scéal na hIomána’ – the Story of Hurling” by Pádraigín Riggs, Lecturer, (Retd.), at the Department of Modern Irish, at NUI Cork. Admission is €10.
On Saturday the weekend - commemorating the great novelist and nationalist, Charles J. Kickham - continues with a guided bus tour Owning, Piltown, Fiddown, Portlaw & Curraghmore with Dr. Willie Nolan and Michael O’Donnell. This starts at 1.30pm and costs €15.
Later that evening at 8.30pm in the Knocknagow Community Centre, a lecture on “Kickham’s Knocknagow Revisited – the Schools’ Folklore Project of the 1930s in the Mullinahone District” will be delivered by Jonny Dillon, NUI, Dublin (Secretary of the Folklore Society Ireland).
On Sunday morning at 11.30am, the Anniversary Mass for C.J. Kickham and James Maher will be held followed by an oration and laying of wreaths by Dr. Tríona Clutterbuck, NUI, Dublin.
The weekend concludes at 3.00pm with poetry reading and music at Killaghey Castle Walled Garden with guest poet Paddy Moran.
