South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has expressed his huge disappointment at the announcement that 206 jobs are to go at Abbott Vascular in Clonmel.
“It was with great disappointment that we learnt of the job losses at Abbott yesterday (Thursday) and our immediate thoughts are with the employees and their families who are facing uncertainty at this time,” said Deputy McGrath
“I am pleased the company have said they are committed to Clonmel and that the redundancy package is quite favourable but this is not much solace to the staff that will lose their jobs and to the contractual workers who will not have their contracts renewed.”
“The decision to lay off 200 employees is a very hard one for the employees, the town of Clonmel and the entire South East Region which has suffered yet another blow in terms of closures and job losses. The South East Region continues to lose out and the Government needs to take immediate action to ensure that the region is not neglected further.” said Deputy McGrath
“This is a very worrying time and these job losses will unfortunately have a direct impact on the many small businesses and shops in Clonmel who are already struggling at this difficult time. The Government needs to do much more on jobs, improving competitiveness and decreasing the cost of doing business,” continued Deputy McGrath
“I hope that as part of the readjustments within Abbott that some of these lay offs will only be temporary and that some of the staff may hopefully find employment with the company again in the near future. Abbott has been a good employer in Clonmel and I hope that they will be able to increase their employment levels again in the future if conditions become more favourable.”
