The Department of Education has ordered random audits of school building projects.
The audit is in an effort to ensure that contractors are complying with proper pay and working conditions on sites.
This has been welcomed by local Minister Alan Kelly.
He said “while the majority of contractors do seem to be compliant I do feel that this audit is badly needed.
“I believe that the motivation for this audit was partly driven by issues I raised with Minister Quinn about questionable practices by contractors in the construction of these schools.
“I raised issues regarding practices at one school building project in Tipperary some time ago and I’m glad this audit will recheck all employment records of projects being completed.
“Ireland is borrowing €2bn from the European Investment Bank to fund the construction of hundreds of new school buildings and education facilities. It goes without saying that all workers on sites funded through the Department of Education have to get their proper entitlements.
“Any Unscrupulous contractors and subcontractors need to be dealt with.
“Pay and conditions of workers, proper payment of taxes and adherenceto proper health and safety practices must be the order of the day andanyone who doesn’t adhere to these must be dealt with strongly’.
