Archaeologist and Dublin native, Dr. Niall Gregory, is the twenty-sixth Cashel Person of the Year. The award is organised annually by the Lions.
Dr. Gregory said he was “overwhelmed, privileged and honoured” to be given the award. To have been nominated was a huge honour but to be selected was beyond his dreams. He said was conscious of the person he was succeeding, Joe Currivan, and knew he had a pair of “great big shoes to fill.”
Niall Gregory was chosen for the outstanding work he did in organising Cashel’s hosting of the European Rural Communes annual meeting in the town last June. He was nominated by Cllr Tom Wood.
Cllr Wood said that Dr Gregory was deserving of the award as the person who contributed so significantly to the life of the town during the past year. Cashel was a better place as a result of the visit of so many people from so many countries and Niall had a vital role to play in that success.
The full report on the award presentation ceremony will be published in The Nationalist, on sale tomorrow.
