A weight-loss programme that saw almost 100 members of a local leisure club shed the pounds and become trimmer and healthier also benefited Hospice to the tune of €3,000.

Minella Transformation, which was held at the Hotel Minella leisure centre in Clonmel, saw 95 club members take part in the programme from January until March.

The total weight loss achieved was 382.5 kgs and the overall winner was Tom Hayes from Kilsheelan.

Competition was intense as Club Minella members vied with each other in their fight against the flab through a programme based on the RTE television show Operation Transformation. Competitors were supplied with fruit by the hotel while a dietitian gave talks and was also available for individual coaching.

Hotel Minella donated some €2,000 to the final tally of €3,000. The hotel pledged €5 for each kilo lost, while those who didn’t reach their target also had to subscribe.

Hotel owner John Nallen said the success of the initiative meant it would be repeated next January, when people are anxious to shed the pounds after Christmas.
