The two nuns who died in a tragic drowning accident in Kerry on Thursday night were both from County Tipperary.
They were Sr Paula Buckley from Camas, Cashel, and Sr Imelda Carew from Kilmore, Dundrum, both members of the Presentation Order.
Both communities were shocked to hear of the deaths of two hugely popular nuns in such tragic circumstances.
Both were based in Dublin but returned home to Tipperary regularly.
Sr Imelda, who was head of the Order’s South East region, attended a reunion of the Presentation Sisters Clonmel 1964 class last month at Hotel Minella.
The former pupil later went on to become a teacher and later principal of the Clonmel school.
She was based at Wainsfort, Terenure in Dublin.
Sr Paula was based in Clondalkin. She is fondly remembered in Cashel.
Both the head of the Presentation Order and local TD Mattie McGrath expressed their shock at the death of the two nuns who got into difficulty while swimming at Inch Beach where they were on holidays.
Congregational Leader of the Presentation Sisters Union, Sr Mary Deane, said it is with great regret that we confirm the deaths of Sr Imelda Carew and Sr Paula Buckley, members of the South East Province of the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary following a tragic drowning accident in Kerry on Thursday, August 14.
The sisters were on holiday in Kerry and got into difficulties during an early evening swim at Inch Strand. They were taken from the water by the Valentia Coastguard and airlifted to Tralee Hospital where they were later pronounced dead.
Sr Deane said - “We are all stunned and shocked by this tragedy. Words seem inadequate to express our loss and sorrow as we come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded on a beautiful sunny evening. It is a tragic loss for all of us and for their families. “These two wonderful women have been a source of inspiration and blessing to many people throughout their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, communities and friends of our beloved Sisters at this time”.
Independent TD Mattie McGrath said it was with a sense of shock and sadness that he learned of the sudden and tragic deaths of Sister Imelda Carew and Sister Paula Buckley, members of the South East province of the Presentation Sisters which occurred of the Kerry coast.
“I want to express my sincerest sympathy to the Sisters’ families and their Community in the Presentation Sisters. My thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time.
“It is indeed a tragic loss. Sisters Carew and Buckley have been a source of inspiration and blessing to many people throughout their lives, in their Ministries and Communities which encompassed the dioceses of Cashel and Emly, Ossory, Waterford and Lismore, Ferns and some of the diocese of Dublin.
