Tipperary TD Alan Kelly has been appointed Minister for the Environment and Local Government in the cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Kelly was elected Labour Party deputy leader last week and his elevation to cabinet was seen as a certainty this week although without knowing the portfolio.
The former MEP had been Minister of State at the Department of Transport.
His appointment to Environment will be widely welcomed in his native county, especially in local government circles.
There will also be delight that Tipperary now has a representative around the cabinet table
