Ardfinnan turned into Christmas Village

Christmas village

Clogheen Hospice Suite Construction

In November 2013, following the passing of the late Patsy Savage from Ardfinnan in the Hospice Suite of St. Theresa’s Hospital Clogheen on October 1, a group of Patsy’s family and friends got together to assist in raising the remaining funds required to construct a second hospice suite at St. Theresa’s Hospital, Clogheen.

The group came up with four major fundraising ideas: Car Boot Sales (donate unwanted items at Ardfinnan Community Centre every Saturday 10am to 1pm); Monster Draw (tickets are on sale in local shops and businesses); Rodeo Night (in February); Christmas Trees, Wreaths and Logs for sale.

The final event turned in to something nobody ever dreamed it could be. Word of this fundraising project spread rapidly and got to RTEs Ear to the Ground. They contacted organisers and offered them a slot on their Christmas Special! A large group of local volunteers arranged what would become known as “Christmas Village”. The Green in Ardfinnan was transformed into a magical dreamland with Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths and logs, all for sale. In the “Christmas Village” market there were stalls with hot chocolate, mulled wine, mince pies, hot dogs, a cake sale and a raffle.

The remembrance tree was on display in the centre of the village. Visitors purchased ribbons for the tree and made donations to the fund. Parish priest Fr. Bobby Power blessed the Remembrance Tree after Mr. Claus turned on the lights. The evening was magical. Not only did people from surrounding communities who visited have an amazing time, they were also very generous to the cause.

Thank you to every person who helped make this event a massive success and one that we hope people will remember for years to come. Thanks to RTE for filming - remember to tune in to ‘Ear to the Ground’ on Thursday, December 19, at 8.30pm.
