Brendan Cummins launches moonlight walk in aid of two charities

Brendan Cummins, Tipperary Person of the Year officially launched the 2014 Aherlow Hotel Moonlight Walk in Aherlow House.

This year the fundraiser will go to two local-based charities, the Circle of Friends cancer care centre in Tipperary town and to the rehabilitation of Shaun Fogarty from Cahir, a previous employee of Aherlow House hotel.

“I’m delighted to launch the fundraiser for two very deserving charities,” said Brendan.

Jennifer Jones Hickey, founder of Circle of Friends was at the launch with her father Pat and Shaun Fogarty’s father Kevin represented his son.

“We feel that both are very worthy causes,” explained Joanne O’Dwyer Hicks, Aherlow House Hotel.

“The Circle of Friends is a volunteer run cancer support centre for the community of Tipperary and local villages and towns while the Shaun Fogarty Appeal is raising funds for Shaun, presently in the Mater hospital in Dublin, to travel to the UK for rehabilitation due to the spinal injury of his C1.”

Last year 19-year old employee Shaun was travelling home from Aherlow House and suffered injuries in a car accident. Shaun is described as a young vibrant man who was looking forward to returning to his second year of college studying Applied Physics in University of Limerick. He loves sports and was especially good at rugby and played for Kilfeacle. He is the oldest of three children born to Kevin and Gretta Fogarty and his friends and family are devastated by his accident. His father Kevin thanked the Aherlow Moonlight Walk committee for including his son in this year’s fundraiser.

This popular annual walk will take place on June 20 at 8pm. Over the past number of years, the Aherlow House Hotel Moonlight Walk has raised over €92,000 for various charities, including the Marie Keating Foundation, The Jack and Jill Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis and Scoil Aonghusa.

This year, for the first time, the event is open to both men and women. To get involved contact Aherlow House Hotel on 062-56153.
