Canadian ambassador visits Carrick school

Canada’s Ambassador to Ireland visited Carrick’s Presentation Primary School to honour its twinning with a school in his native Newfoundland.

His excellency Loyola Hearn and his wife Maureen visited on December 5 with Tom Nealon and Margaret Doyle of the Ireland-Newfoundland Connections group.

Mrs Bowe-Power’s 3rd class and Mrs Gahan’s 5th class pupils told the visitors about the connections they have forged with St Matthew’s Elementary School’s students in Newfoundland’s capital St John’s through Skype sessions and letters. The ambassador enjoyed the children’s singing and spoke proudly about his Irish roots in Carrick. “He shared some of his own very interesting story, which was a great experience for the girls, who hope to maintain their connections with Newfoundland,” said school PRO Una Fahy.
