Cashel Lions Club has new president

Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club’s new President Pat Murphy took up the key position at a meeting of the Club last week.

Mr Murphy from Ballyquin, Carrick-on-Suir is a long time member of the town’s Lions Club and earlier this year received one of the organisation’s highest honours, the Mervyn Jones award for his services to the club and local community.

He took over the chains of office from outgoing president Stephanie Keating on Monday, July 21.

The Lions Club meeting began with a minute’s silence in memory of veteran club member Jack Lalor, who passed away the previous week. Mr Lalor, who was The Nationalist’s Carrick-on-Suir correspondent for many years, was also presented with the Mervyn Jones award earlier this year.

Stephanie Keating said she had enjoyed her two years as the Club’s President and thanked all the Club’s members and the people of Carrick-on-Suir for their support of Lions Club charity events and initiatives during her term.

She cited the launch of the Club’s Message in a Bottle campaign, which encourages elderly people to keep details of medication and important information such as GP cand next of kin contact details in a bottle in case of emergencies as one of the highlights of her term as president.

Other highlights were the Lions Club function celebrating all its annual Youth Award winners and the Intel Ideation Project where 60 local secondary school students proposed job creation proposals at a camp earlier this year.
