Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel students studying at University College Cork have been awarded scholarships to attend the prestigious 2014 Shanghai Summer School in China this month.

Nicola Byrne from William St., Carrick-on-Suir and Kevin Rice from Kilnamack West, Clonmel are studying for a Higher Diploma in Chinese Business, Language and Culture at UCC and were offered the scholarship as part of the Government’s Springboard scheme for job-seekers.

The scholarships were offered by the University of Shanghai with which UCC has a long-standing relationship and have been granted by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

During the summer school, the students attend intensive Chinese language classes, a lectures series programme and will be afforded the opportunity to experience the essence of Chinese culture.

Nicola Byrne said she was delighted to have been given the opportunity to return to education and study at UCC this year and found the Higher Diploma in Chinese Business, Language and Culture to have been “very insightful, thought provoking and challenging.”

Nicola is hoping to get a greater insight into Chinese culture while abroad, which will put “the theoretical aspects of the course to practice. She said she is grateful for the opportunity to study the language intensively in an authentic environment.”
