Hayes says no plan to close post offices

Labour Party local election candidate Liam Hayes says he welcomes the ‘clear statement by Minister Pat Rabbitte that there is no intention to close Post Offices’.

The Fethard-based candidate, standing in the Carrick-on-Suir electoral area, also welcomes the commitment that the Cabinet sub-committee will report within six months on government proposals to ensuring the future sustainability of the postal network through out the country.

Mr Hayes, whose nephew PJ is the post master in Killenaule, has being lobbying Ministers Rabbitte and Burton for some time to ensure that Government policies allow the local Post Offices become an engine for regeneration within our communities.

One hundred and ninety seven Post Offices were closed during the last Government with the approval of the I.P.U., and since 2010 only 17 closures has occurred.
